Note
From the CYP Chairman
This month
you were exposed to two emerging areas in the Charleston
region: the Upper King District and Noisette/Park
Circle. These areas host innovative businesses and
offerings that are impacting the community daily. CYP
also has the opportunity to significantly influence the
region. Earth Day reminded us to do our part in reusing
and recycling daily materials. A single reusable bag has
the power to eliminate 1,000 plastic bags and 500 paper
bags over its lifetime. CYP members' impact alone would
be 400 times that. We are consistently committed to
engaging and encouraging young professionals to get
involved and support community efforts and businesses
such as the ones featured this month in order to make
our region a better place to live and work.
Dan Vroon, CYP Chairman
CYP went GREEN on Earth Day
CYP jumped on
board the LEEP Bio-diesel bus April 22 with a guided
tour from Jeff Baxter, project manager ,
Noisette, where young professionals saw North
Charleston’s eco-enclave. The tour included stops at the
Naval Base Memorial and Park, Southeast Biodiesel and
Mixson housing
development while seeing many other exciting sites. The
Noisette project is the 3,000-acre historic center of
North Charleston. Its residential, industrial,
commercial and recreational areas are being reshaped to
form a sustainable community - one that is equally
attuned to social needs, environmental responsibility
and economic vitality. The sustainable revitalization in
North
Charleston’s historic core, and the future of the Navy
Yard at Noisette, are luring new, entrepreneurial
businesses to the East Montague business district and
the Navy Yard, indications that the guidelines of the
Noisette Community Master Plan are molding a sustainable
future for North Charleston.
Tour highlights included:
Mixson - The first and
largest group of residences in South Carolina to pursue
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for
Homes silver certification. LEED is the green building
rating system and nationally accepted benchmark for the
design, construction, and operation of high performance
green buildings. Each Mixson home will also achieve the
Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star
accreditation.
Hunley Waters – Energy
efficient homes. They build homes off-site in a
controlled environment then put them together in pieces
Navy Yard – 340 acres of
dense, mixed-use, walkable area with amenities and urban
core
Riverfront Park –
Performance pavilion
Naval Base Memorial –
Dedicated in November and has information about old Navy
Base
Chicora Gardens – Preserved
48 acres of park after it was build in 1900’s. Also in
the process of preserving officer’s quarters
10 Storehouse Row –
Galleria style office space
8 and 9 Storehouse Row –
Rehabilitation into residential lofts
Oak Terrace Neighborhood –
New neighborhood with environmental standards of Earth
Craft which constructs around preserving trees
S outheast
BioDiesel - Produces high quality, 100% pure
biodiesel fuel. The product is created using multiple
feedstocks, from both virgin and recycled sources, that
are processed to produce quality-tested B100 fuel that
meets all ASTM D 6751 standards
The trip concluded at Navy Yard’s 10 Storehouse Row for
the expo and reception presented by MIXSON where
companies showcased eco-friendly products, services and
tips on how to GO GREEN.

Talking Politics in the Workplace
There are already enough politics to worry about at
work. With this year's especially heated election,
you might feel an overload. It's hard to avoid
conversations about candidates and who you're
supporting and why. So be smart about talking
politics so that you won't have to campaign for
yourself later when it comes to office politics.
